Data access

From data discovery to secure research access

Found the data you need? NDP provides the secure infrastructure and managed processes that enable researchers to access approved data through our network of TRE Hubs.

Access is managed through the Hub responsible for the data you wish to use. We’ll help you find the right route and move from discovery to research within a secure Trusted Research Environment.

Which data do you want to access?

Each TRE Hub manages its own application process. Choose the Hub responsible for the data you need to go to its application route.

The access process

A typical journey to secure access

Requirements vary between TRE Hubs and datasets, but most applications follow the same seven stages.

1

Discover

Use the NDP Data Discovery tool to identify datasets relevant to your research.

2

Select your TRE Hub

Identify which TRE Hub manages the data and follow the link to its application process.

3

Apply

Submit a research application describing your proposed use of the data and the datasets required.

4

Review and approval

Your application follows the governance and approval process set by the relevant TRE Hub and data provider.

5

Researcher onboarding

Complete any required researcher accreditation, agreements, training or identity verification.

6

Secure access

Once approvals are in place, NDP provisions your secure research environment and makes the approved data available for analysis.

7

Outputs

Research outputs leave the secure environment only through disclosure control and output review processes.

Eligibility

Who can apply

Requirements are set by the relevant TRE Hub and may differ between datasets. You may be asked to:

  • Be affiliated with a recognised research organisation or other eligible institution
  • Demonstrate an appropriate, clearly defined research purpose
  • Complete information governance or Safe Researcher training
  • Provide evidence of identity and institutional affiliation
  • Agree to the terms governing use of the TRE and individual datasets
  • Obtain any additional approvals required by the data provider

Check the relevant TRE Hub for the criteria that apply to your application.

Governance & Approvals

A hub-led governance model

Data is not made available simply because it is hosted or managed within NDP.

Decisions on whether data can be used for a particular purpose remain with the appropriate TRE Hub, data controller or data provider, under the agreements that apply to that data.

NDP provides the secure infrastructure and managed processes that support those decisions — so Hubs keep control of their data while benefiting from consistent, scalable delivery.
